Helpful Hints

For best results, maintain a 3 inch level in the litter box to maximize odor control and make cleanups easy. We also recommend scooping at least twice a day, especially if you own more than one cat.

Before you fill the litter box, you can spray the bottom with household cooking spray to prevent clumps from sticking. You can also place a sheet of wax paper on the bottom of the box, or spread a handful or two of baking soda before filling.

Some cats have a vigorous covering technique after using the litter box. To keep the litter from flying all over, try switching to an extra-deep box. This will also help reduce tracking.

Because Swheat Scoop looks and feels like conventional litter, cats tend to accept it without much fuss. To make the changeover even easier, pour three inches of Swheat Scoop litter on the bottom and add one inch of the brand you’re currently using on top. Then allow your cat to freely mix the products when using the litter box. Repeat this process, if necessary, when you change the litter again. But this time, add only a half inch of the other brand. Only flush when there is 100% Swheat Scoop litter in the box.

Dogs and other pets may be attracted to the protein in our litter. Please place litter box where they cannot easily access the contents. Some dogs and other pets may have a tendency to over-consume.

Production, Manufacturing, Quality Control Practices/Rationale

In the production, manufacturing, quality control scheme that was designed to produce a consistent high quality product, one of the original and primary concerns was that we were able to remove any insect eggs or larvae from the wheat during the process. To achieve this, the wheat is cleaned using a screen process and air machine to remove any insect particulates and other grains prior to grinding. The next step is to send the processed grain through an entoleter (high speed centrifuge as in a flour plant), which kills any eggs in the grain. From the entoleter the grain moves through a two-stage roll stand grinder that grinds the grain to the specified size for pelletizing.  In the pelletizing process, steam is added bringing the grain to a temperature of 212 degrees and then the grain is “pushed” through pellet dies at hundreds of pounds of pressure.

After pelletizing, the wheat litter is cooled and crumbled using a counter flow pellet cooler, sized in the Rotex shaker, and packaged on one of our three packaging lines. All the packaging machinery is automated, and storage bins have negative air that removes any excess flour dust from the finished product. This patented process was designed so that the shelf life of the final product would be maximized.

To further confirm our manufacturing and production methodology, Entomologists at North Dakota State University, and AURI, we worked with during the plant design, confirmed to us that no eggs or larvae would survive when exposed to the temperature and pelletizing pressures.  Our wheat litter product since inception, has demonstrated a shelf life in excess of one year and this has been proven consistently over the 14 years of its existence, that is, unless the product is stored in a facility/warehouse already contaminated with bugs. We were, and remain, well aware that keeping the bugs out of our “live protein” end product (Natural Wheat Litter) would be a key to survival.

One of the things we learned early on was that bird food has a history of contaminating warehouses and retail shelves.  The natural properties of Wheat Litter (like flour, corn meal, etc.) will act as an attractant to the bugs from warehouse bins and retail shelves from a relatively long distance, if the warehouse, or retail conditions are already contaminated and/or infested.  Bugs in their reproduction cycle consistently plague bird food manufacturers unless they use nitrogen gas in the bagging process, and there is no other known way to exterminate the bugs without ruining the end product.

We are hopeful this explanation will satisfy your concerns regarding the origin of the “bug” issue at the warehouse/retail level.  Should you have additional questions, please advise and we will respond to them. We hope this helps to explain the process and the reasons we feel confident that we ship a bug free product.

Feline Friendly

At Pet Care Systems, we receive hundreds of letters from cat owners praising the performance of Swheat Scoop litter, and how naturally their cats accepted it.

Clay and chemical free. Unlike many scoopable litters, Swheat Scoop litter contains no silica dust, sodium bentonite, chemicals or flowery fragrances. Which is good news for your cat and you.

Safely digestible. Swheat Scoop litter is safe and non-toxic for cats and kittens, as well as other household pets. The granules can be licked during grooming or digested without serious health consequences.

Soft on sensitive paws.
For cats and kittens with tender paws, Swheat Scoop litter is a softer choice than many clay or pelleted litters. In fact, it’s so gentle, it’s even recommended by veterinarians for newly declawed cats.

Cat accepted.
Cats are creatures of habit, and can be apprehensive when they encounter a different litter. But they find it easy to get used to Swheat Scoop litter because it looks and feels like conventional litter.

Good for the Earth

Each year, over 2 million tons of cat litter ends up in municipal solid waste landfills (Judd Alexander, In Defense of Garbage, Praeger 1993). Most of that litter, an estimated 100,000 truckloads per year, is made from clay that is mined and doesn’t biodegrade because it’s never reabsorbed by the earth. That’s why the time is right to consider the merits of a product like Swheat Scoop Natural Wheat Litter.

100% biodegradable.
Strictly speaking, clay-based litters never biodegrade because they cannot be absorbed or broken down by the organic environment. But Swheat Scoop litter will readily break down upon disposal and simply dissolve away.

Sewer and septic safe.
Swheat Scoop is the only cat litter on the market that’s certified flushable by the SGS U.S. Testing Company, an independent research organization. Which means that clumps of this product can be safely flushed without clogging your sewer or septic system, when used as directe

100% compostable.
Swheat Scoop litter can be composted or used as mulch for ornamental plants (non-vegetable gardens) once it has been thoroughly scooped.

A renewable resource.
Swheat Scoop litter is made from naturally processed, secondary (non-food grade) wheat grown in the heart of the Great Plains states.

Clay Litter

Some cat owners question the safety of scoopable clay litters for their family and pets. They want to know if it’s harmful to inhale the silica dust when these products are poured. And whether it’s hazardous if their cat licks or ingests the granules during grooming.

While Swheat Scoop is a scoopable litter, it’s 100% clay-free. It doesn’t require any silica, sodium bentonite, chemicals or flowery fragrances to clump and control odor. And Swheat Scoop is naturally non-toxic because it’s made from naturally processed wheat. In fact, this litter is so gentle, it’s even recommended by veterinarians for kittens and newly declawed cats.
