DETROIT LAKES, MN (07/24/02) Pet Care Systems founder Mike Hughes first considered the concept of a natural, biodegradable cat litter when he learned that more than 100,000 truckloads of clay cat litter are dumped into U.S. landfills each year litter that never decomposes or dissolves. He set out to find a solution to the disposal problem, as well as a partial solution for the wheat farmers in his region who had excess secondary wheat supply. It takes about 105 pounds of secondary (non-food grade) wheat to produce 100 pounds of Swheat Scoop Natural Wheat Litter. That makes Mike an innovative agricultural leader, according to one Minnesota organization who is grateful for his assistance to the farming community.
Pet Care Systems, Inc. was awarded the inaugural Agricultural Utilization Research Institute (AURI) Ag Innovator of the Year Award on June 19, 2002 for its contributions to value-added agriculture in Minnesota. Pet Care Systems, Inc. and its president Mike Hughes were selected by the AURI board of directors to receive the award for their line of Swheat Scoop wheat-based cat and small animal litters.
Swheat Scoop is the result of Mikes quest to perfect a litter thats safe for pets, people and the environment, without sacrificing performance. Part of the original mission of our company was to help farmers create a stable income base by introducing innovative value-added products, said Mike Hughes. By developing a cat litter from secondary wheat, we have given them a practical use for a commodity that is otherwise difficult to sell.
In April of this year, PCS was acquired by Commodity Trading Company, a wholly-owned subsidiary of the Farmers Union Marketing and Processing Association (FUMPA). That means there are more marketing dollars available to spread the word about Swheat Scoop, and that the company is now farmer-owned.
Swheat Scoop is a clay-free, chemical-free, biodegradable litter. Since it doesnt contain any chemicals or artificial flowery fragrances, its completely safe for kittens and cats as well as other animals in the household. And unlike most litters that never decompose, Swheat Scoop is sewer/septic-safe and certified flushable.
The litters packaging and marketing materials were recently redesigned and introduced into the marketplace, and a national advertising campaign targeting millions of natural cat owners has just been launched.
